Per 1,000 what?
IP/ED utilization rates computed per 1,000 patients look reasonable — until you remember the industry standard is per 1,000 patient-years. The difference is subtle, material, and invisible to anyone not looking for it. Catch it, and you protect executive reporting from a systematic misstatement. Miss it, and every downstream comparison is quietly distorted.
Rigor at the definitional level
- Validate every metric against source-of-truth tables, not just prior dashboards.
- Align definitions to domain conventions — payer reporting standards, HEDIS-adjacent logic.
- Codify definitions in a governed catalog so the correction sticks.
The most valuable analyst in the room is often the one who questions the denominator.
